We have 8 wheels available. Please note that students will need to share the wheels if everyone wants to use them.

Learn exciting technique throwing on the potter’s wheel. This 2.5 hour class is ideal for beginners and you will learn how wedge the clay, centre, pull up the walls and shape your piece.

 One wheel per student

11 week pottery course

This is a 6-week throwing course for those looking to get familiar with the wheel, or develop their throwing skills further. Students will learn:

The cycle of clay from start to finish and  information about types of clay and firings

How to centre the clay and form a pot on the potter's wheel.
- we will begin by focusing on developing strong key throwing skills - centring, lifting, shaping (cylinders and bowls) and finishing on the wheel. 
- an experienced and skilled tutor will expand by teaching more complex shapes and with bigger weights of clay dependant on each student's ability.
- turning (trimming) a pot - this is the method of finishing and finessing thrown work once leather hard (partly dried) by returning it to the wheel and removing excess clay using a metal tool.  

Pulling handles to give your pots extra functionality and style.

Creating your own makers mark to stamp your pots with.

Surface decoration - carving and slip decoration techniques

How to glaze your pots to achieve the best finish with our wide selection of unique, in-house studio glazes.

**What is provided?**

Materials, glazes and tools are provided throughout the course. 
Each student will have their own wheel to work on for the entire course. 
Clay is charged at £3 per kg (pots are only weighed once finished and ready for firing, clay for throwing practice is unlimited.)

**What should I bring?**

Please bring an apron or an old shirt, a towel, a pen and a notepad. 
We have a wide selection of tools available but you may wish to bring your own if you have them.

Please tie back long hair, be ready to remove rings, bracelets and watches, and cut fingernails short.

Come down, unleash your creativity and pop a cork. It is the perfect intimate taster class in central London to start your weekend!

The taster class in London will be 2 hours, with an expert tutor guiding you through handbuilding pottery techniques. You can learn to create bespoke mugs and vases, and our tutor is ready to support you in any other project you have in mind.

**What is provided?
**

The price includes clay, firing (up to 1 kg) and glazing upto stoneware temperatures. Anything above the 1kg allowance is charged at £3 per kg.

Aprons, tools and materials, including coloured slips are provided.

**What should I bring?
**

The only requirement for this class is that you bring yourself, the bottle is optional.

**What is the size of the class?
**

This class caters for 12 students.

BYOB Pottery Handbuilding Taster

We are thrilled to welcome Rosa Bortolozzo to Urban Potters Classes to host our 5 hour porcelain throwing and turning workshop. 

If you have ever wanted to learn to throw with porcelain, but have been put off by its reputation, now is your chance! Tackle this challenge and experience the joys of working with porcelain. 

Rosa is an Italian potter based in London at North Street Potters. Graduating from Camberwell College of Arts, she has been  honing her craft for twenty years. Rosa throws vessels of different sizes and forms, in large batches, then experiments with a range of oxides on vitrified porcelain. Her works are notable for their diversity in form and bright colours. 

Through demonstrations and one-on-one support, you will learn about the clay’s unique qualities, on top of learning how to prepare, throw and trim your vessels successfully. Rosa will be running this workshop over two Fridays in 2.5 hour sessions. 

- Day one: Learn about the properties of porcelain and how to prepare the clay by wedging. Learn to throw porcelain vessels that are prepared for turning.

- Day Two: Learn to turn your porcelain vessels. On this day, you will lean how to achieve translucency in your finished work through trimming, getting the very best out of your clay. 

Clay not included in the price, you will be able to purchase the porcelain in the studio, minimum of half a bag (6kg) for £12.

After creating your pottery, we will glaze and fire your pots, making them functional pieces of art you can take home. If you choose, you may collect your items unglazed.
